Analysis of methane biodegradation by Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b

The microbial oxidation of methane in the atmosphere is performed by methanotrophic bacteria that use methane as a unique source of carbon and energy. The objective of this work consisted of the investigation of the best conditions of methane biodegradation by methanotrophic bacteria Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b that oxidize it to carbon dioxide, and the use of these microorganisms in monito...

Study of Developmental Stages of Methylosinus trichosporium with the Aid of Fluorescent-Antibody Staining Techniques.

When stained by using an indirect fluorescent-antibody technique, Methylosinus trichosporium displayed an uneven fluorescence. Exospores and the polar tips of some vegetative cells displayed a more intense fluorescence than the other cells. Cross-absorption of the specific anti-M. trichosporium immunoglobulin G with exospores resulted in no fluorescence of exospores or exospore regions of sporu...

Detoxification of mercury by methanobactin from Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b.

Many methanotrophs have been shown to synthesize methanobactin, a novel biogenic copper-chelating agent or chalkophore. Methanobactin binds copper via two heterocyclic rings with associated enethiol groups. The structure of methanobactin suggests that it can bind other metals, including mercury. Here we report that methanobactin from Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b does indeed bind mercury when...

Genome sequence of the obligate methanotroph Methylosinus trichosporium strain OB3b.

Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b (for "oddball" strain 3b) is an obligate aerobic methane-oxidizing alphaproteobacterium that was originally isolated in 1970 by Roger Whittenbury and colleagues. This strain has since been used extensively to elucidate the structure and function of several key enzymes of methane oxidation, including both particulate and soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) and th...

Effect of Chlorinated Ethene Conversion on Viability and Activity of Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b.

The effect of transformation of chlorinated ethenes on the cell viability of Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b was investigated. A comparison of the loss of viability with the decrease in transformation rates showed that for the monooxygenase-mediated transformation of all chlorinated ethenes except vinyl chloride the decrease in cell viability was the predominant toxic effect.
